The recruitment and selection process for the Transit Operator position consists of 10 steps and can take several months to complete. Applicants must successfully complete each step in order to be considered for the next step in the process.

Step 1 – Application and Screening

Applicants apply on-line and respond to prerequisite questions and submit their resume for consideration and review by HR staff. You will receive an acknowledgement e-mail; however, please note that we receive thousands of applications per year and applicants that best match the required skills and competencies are selected to proceed to the next step. Due to this high volume, we are able to advise only those candidates who are selected to proceed to the next step.

Step 2 – Operator Information Session

Successful candidates from step 1 are invited to an information session where you will learn further about the position and have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the role. In addition, candidates will undergo cognitive ability testing as part of the recruitment process. Only successful candidates from this step will proceed to an interview.

Step 3 – Job Shadow Observation

At the information session, you will be provided with instructions on the completion of a Job Shadow assignment which must be completed prior to attending an interview if you are selected to proceed to this step.

Step 4 – Interview

In order to hire the best qualified candidates, the TTC utilizes behavioural based interview questions to gather factual information about a candidate to objectively assess the candidate’s ability to do the job. Our goal is to select candidates who have the necessary skills, experience and abilities required for the Transit Operator position.  The interviews are conducted by a panel of Human Resources staff.

Step 5 – References

At the time of interview applicants will be asked to provide work-related references from the past five years of employment and sign a consent form authorizing the TTC and/or the TTC’s authorized agent to contact these references. Personal references and references from co-workers will not be accepted. A direct supervisor for each employer is required.

Step 6 – Conditional Offer

Candidates who have successfully met the conditions of steps 1-5 are presented with a conditional offer of employment which requires further certification as outlined in Steps 7 and 8 below.

Step 7 – CZ Licence Pre-requisite/Medical/Fit For Duty Testing

The TTC will book an appointment for you at our service provider and you must satisfactorily meet the conditions of the certification process. This includes a pre-employment medical and drug testing.

Step 8 – Criminal Background Check

Candidates are required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Background Check form provided by the TTC and processed by Toronto Police Services (TPS). The TTC sends the form to TPS for processing and the results are mailed directly to the candidate. The candidate contacts the TTC to inform of results and provides original copy to the TTC.

Step 9 – Documentation

Upon successful completion of Steps 7 and 8, the candidate is required to complete documents pertinent to the on-boarding process to prepare for a training start date. Please note you are responsible for maintaining an acceptable Driver’s Abstract (a driver record search will be conducted prior to the commencement of your training date).

Step 10 – Training date confirmation/start of employment

Following step 9, you are contacted by HR staff with a training date (your first day of employment) and an assigned work location two weeks prior to your start date.  Please note that an offer of employment is conditional upon successful completion of mandatory training to become a Transit Operator. Training varies in length depending on mode. Bus Training is 25 days, Streetcar Training is 32 days and Subway Training is 27 days. Please note modes cannot be selected by the candidate and placement is based on business needs and requirements.
