A bit about my uncle Doug

CEO Andy Byford and Douglas Gardiner in 2016. 10 May, 2017

Dear Andy,

Retired TTC employee Douglas Gardiner passed away on Sun., May 7, 2017 at Sunnybrook Health Centre. Douglas was 101 years old.

Douglas joined the TTC in 1948 after a distinguished career in the Canadian Military, fighting in Europe during World War II and was wounded twice before the conflict ended.

Douglas started his career as an Operator at the Malvern Garage, and then moved to the Danforth Garage while also doing runs for Gray Coach as required. He eventually ended up at the Birchmount Garage and remained there until his retirement in 1981 after 33 years and three months of accident-free service. He was very proud of his perfect driving record.

Douglas was a very active individual. He was a member of the TTC Bowling League, played hockey for the TTC and also some baseball with a TTC team. After retirement, he went on to be the Canadian Senior’s Golf Champion and continued golfing right up to the age of 95.

He always carried his own bag and walked the course. He was a lifetime member of the Westview Golf and Country Club in York Region. He had a great sense of humour and will be sadly missed by his immediate family and his grandchildren and great grandchildren and by all who knew him.

He always spoke of the TTC with great pride and really enjoyed being a part of it for his working career.
