Metrolinx decision to operate and maintain LRT lines

As you may have read in today’s Toronto Star, and now in other media, Metrolinx informed us yesterday of their intention to not only build and design the new LRT lines in Toronto, but also to operate and maintain these lines.

Their argument for this approach is one of cost savings over the life of these projects.

The TTC’s position on this matter has been that if it were to operate the new lines, then it should also maintain them. If, however, there is a desire to have a private contractor maintain the lines, then the same contractor should also operate them. In short, maintenance and operations cannot be separated out.

Metrolinx has opted with this approach. The TTC will, of course, work closely with Metrolinx as these new lines proceed to ensure safety for workers and customers; a seamless transfer at interchange stations, including those serviced by buses; and seamless fare integration for customers.

All of these details will be worked out between the TTC and Metrolinx. In the end, it’s about transit expansion for Toronto – something both the City and Province are deeply committed to. This decision, I would like to add, will not have any impact on the TTC workforce or our existing subway, streetcar and bus operations. This only relates to the new LRT lines, which the Province is funding.
