Thank you for carrying on

It has been nearly a month since our first employee tested positive for COVID-19 and since then we have had 18 more employees test positive. This is unprecedented and uncertain times, but I’m happy to share the news that three employees who had the virus are now fully recovered and back at work, and a fourth is scheduled to return today.

It’s a small ray of light in an incredibly difficult time we’re living in. So many people, despite a deep decline in ridership, rely on the TTC to get them from A to B. In many cases, we are redeploying services to routes where we know workers are making essential trips. More and more of our vehicles now operate with an additional onboard barrier to further distance customers from Operators. Thanks goes out to our skilled tradespeople at Harvey Shop for manufacturing these in short order.

I’m grateful to everyone for practicing physical distancing across our transportation and maintenance divisions, garages and shops. It’s incredibly important that we all continue to be personally vigilant and keep doing those basic things that are preventing the spread of this disease:
> Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
> Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
> Sneeze or cough into your sleeve or arm.
> Stay home if you’re not feeling well.

I can’t stress enough that priority access is available for essential frontline workers and supporting staff who might exhibit symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (cough, fever, shortness of breath) or who were in close contact with someone who has tested positive. Please stay home and contact Occupational Health at 416-393-4572 or OHEW@ttc.ca to be connected with a Disability Management Specialist.

To anyone feeling anxious or alone, confidential support through the Employee and Family Assistance Program is available 24/7 at workhealthlife.com or by calling 1-800-572-0039.

Behind the scenes, staff is working diligently to find vendors and procure masks for our employees. To supplement these efforts, Harvey Shop has fabricated several prototype masks and will tool up to help manufacture masks for frontline employees serving our city.

Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our employees. Thank you to everyone for your unrelenting commitment to your co-workers and to our customers. We will get through this, together.

One customer by the name of Adrianna B. summed it up best in this expression of gratitude: “Thanks a million, TTC. You all rock!! Thank you for the extra buses. Thank you to ALL the brave drivers out there and thank you for always trying your best and caring enough to step up in tough times. May the Good Lord bless you and keep you all safe.”

Stay safe.
