Latest update on TTC, City, Province upload discussions

This morning (Oct. 16), the City released an update report on the future of public transit in Toronto, including both expansion projects and ownership of the existing network.

I am pleased to let you know that in partnership with City Manager Chris Murray, the City and TTC have been able to secure terms of an agreement that would leave our existing subway system as it is today, with the TTC operating and maintaining all elements.

This was a critically important part of these negotiations and was important to me in order to preserve and build on the excellent work you all do day in and day out. It was also City Council’s position that we should continue to own, operate and maintain the subway as part of an integrated transit network.

The other good news from this agreement with the Province is City money that was previously to be dedicated to expansion projects will now remain with the city for use on state of good repair work, including those items highlighted in the TTC’s Capital Investment Plan.

With respect to expansion, the Province has agreed to fully fund the delivery of their priority projects with support from the Federal Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), with the TTC operating the lines and retaining fare revenues.

I think you will agree that having these matters resolved accomplishes two important things: It addresses concerns we had regarding the future of our network and how those changes might impact our employees; it also means Torontonians will be getting more, much-needed high order transit.
